Rounds of severe weather today

Round one is already visible on radar crossing Lake Michigan. Large bow echo/squall line racing towards the east will reach the area about 11:30. Expect about the same results we had a few days ago. Thunderstorms will approach with strong winds bringing lightning and wind driven rains. Heavy rain behind the line will make flooding possible. Looking over a 24 hour radar loop, this line actually started horizontal in the plains. Now vertical, very interesting to see a line like this shoot upright and travel east. At first glance, it looked like the line would advance north over our area, hitting the thumb region. While that is still possible, growth is shown on the southern end of the line. So we aren’t out of the woods yet.  This will only be but a taste of whats to come.

Morning line over Western Michigan

Afternoon round will probably look similar, but a chance of tornadic development exists. This will occur primarily during the early stages of development as the air is full of energy (CAPE). A few isolated supercells could form before creating a solid squall line again. However it pans out, a increased level of significant severe weather is expected this afternoon/evening. Will probably have another update out before end of the day.

Just for the heck of it, I’m going to draw my thoughts on this evening’s storm formation, in MS Paint(ok GIMP, but my freehand on the computer is poor anyway). To help, I’ve enlisted a nice outline of Michigan from worldatlas.com, that way we know somewhat where we are.

Taadaa!

Blue dot represents near where Chelsea is. Obviously a horizontal band that moves south is what I believe will happen. Red is the highest intensity while green would be just rain. Should be interesting to see what pans out.
