Mild Exit

This week started chilly. Almost like it was winter. We were in a sizeable trough, or elongation of low pressure, that drew plenty of cool air from Canada. Up here in Michigan, highs only got to the lower 20s or even teens. Saw a few comments made by Floridians shouting at Canada to ‘shut the door!’ (they got into the mid 50s during the cold snap)

Many people thought winter was here for good. However, late week we have another temperature swing.

A ridge, or mass of high pressure, is set to move in overnight tonight (Thursday), and temperatures on Friday will be in the lower to mid 50s. Feeling like January all right!

This contrast in temperatures points to a pattern change. To fully diagnose these patterns, it needs to be viewed on a global scale. For now, I’ll just say that the pattern we were in, was dry and not very wintry. Come next weekend, we could be seeing a pretty consistent light snowfall schedule!

A cold Florida. Temperatures ranged from the mid 20s to 50s during a cold snap early this week. (CIMSS)
